Summary
Momentum often masquerades as progress.
When observable improvement flattens or inverts, I reassess the mode.
Persistence is not the default posture. If I continue, it must be by decision.
Rationale
In iterative work—design, research, drafting, engineering—common failure patterns include:
- Sunk cost escalation
- Near-completion illusion
- Constraint stacking instead of simplification
- Increased effort with diminishing returns
If improvement is not observable, progress cannot be assumed.
Continuing automatically violates:
- Reality Is Sovereign
- You Cannot Verify What You Did Not Observe
Unexamined persistence compounds entropy.
Plateau Is Not Failure
Plateau is common in meaningful work.
Breakthrough often requires sustained effort beyond visible improvement.
The requirement is not to stop at plateau.
The requirement is to notice it.
If I choose to persist:
- I state why.
- I accept the cost.
- I monitor for inversion.
- I remain willing to pivot.
Unconscious persistence is escalation.
Conscious persistence is discipline.
BoundaryAcute Execution Mode
In acute execution states (e.g., crisis response, live demos, production failures), containment overrides reassessment.
When stopping the bleeding, execute.
Reassess after stabilization.
