# Method: Extreme Exploration for Limit Discovery

> Exploration may go to the edge so implementation does not have to.

## Description

This method documents the intentional use of **extreme exploration** to discover limits, failure modes, and invariants—followed by an explicit decision to **pull back** rather than pre-optimize or prematurely implement.

The goal of extreme exploration is not to operate at extremes.
It is to **identify where operation would become unsafe, brittle, or inhumane**.

Stopping early is a success condition.

---

## What Extreme Exploration Is

Extreme exploration is the deliberate act of:

- pushing an idea beyond reasonable operating conditions
- stress-testing it against scale, speed, and abstraction
- imagining misuse, overextension, and category errors
- allowing uncomfortable implications to surface fully

This includes thinking through scenarios that are:
- unrealistic
- undesirable
- or intentionally unimplementable

These scenarios are tools, not goals.

---

## What Extreme Exploration Is Not

Extreme exploration is not:

- a roadmap
- a commitment
- a statement of ambition
- a future direction
- a design target

Insights discovered at extremes are **inputs**, not requirements.

---

## The Pullback Rule

Once limits are identified:

- the exploration is intentionally reduced back to a humane scope
- implementation remains bounded
- speculative mechanisms are not designed
- governance and enforcement are deferred

Pulling back is not caution.
It is correctness.

---

## Relationship to CST

Extreme exploration commonly concludes when [Cognitive Saturation Threshold (CST)](/canon/definitions/cognitive-saturation-threshold.md) is reached.

At CST, the correct move is closure, not continuation.

---

## Why This Method Exists

Without this method:

- extreme exploration is mistaken for aspiration
- unfinished ideas invite completion pressure
- speculative edge cases get promoted to features
- restraint is misread as indecision

This method exists so limits can be learned **without becoming obligations**.

---

## Constraint

Extreme exploration is only valid if:

- its outcomes are documented
- scope reduction is explicit
- closure is intentional
- no pre-optimization occurs

If an exploration cannot be safely stopped, it should not be started.
